Vamos a La Playa

February 26, 2019

Despite being physically in Philadelphia, I am still mentally re-living Puerto Rico. Last week was a beautiful adventure of culture, food, music, and history. We visited the umbrella adorned street of Fortaleza, meandered through La Placita's nightlife plaza, soaked up the sun, sand, and waves, and overall, enjoyed ourselves a little too much...or maybe not enough? I sense a return reunion in the future.

What better place to host a physiatry medical conference than an island that has, much like our patients, rehabilitated itself after a terrible ordeal? The people of Puerto Rico were inviting, friendly, and excited to show off their rebuilt paradise following Hurricane Maria.

We explored the streets (or rather calle) of Old San Juan, pretended to be conquistadors at the famous forts of El Morro and San Cristobal, and celebrated some much-needed vacation time overlooking the ocean.

Of course, we made time to network with other physicians and present our medical cases, too!

TRAVEL STYLE HACK:

My new favorite travel shoes are these adorable Rothy's made entirely from plastic water bottles! They were perfect for touring the city and transitioned easily from day to night in both casual and professional attire. They're also machine washable, lightweight, and easy to pack. Get $20 off your first pair by clicking HERE.

The best part about Puerto Rico was the food. We tried Mofongo, which is a delicious plantain-based pâté with a variety of toppings. I chose shrimp because who could say no to seafood when you're in the middle of the ocean?

Mojitos were another recommendation that did not disappoint. Also, did you know the Piña Colada was invented in Puerto Rico?!

I could not help but snap a photo of my friend's fish tacos. Talk about drool-worthy!

And the fruit was always so fresh and juicy.

For fun, we decided to go jet-skiing on the open ocean. We went so fast and got so much air, at some points I didn't know if I'd land back on the jet-ski or in the ocean. It was a little frightening and required some serious forearm strength but was definitely worth the thrill.

Our last day, we went sailing on a Catamaran to remote islands for snorkeling with the tropical fish and coral. I could not have asked for a better conclusion to the trip.

One of the highlights was reconnecting with an old medical school friend. Despite not seeing each other for almost three years, it felt like no time had passed.

So hats off to you Puerto Rico!

Until next time...and for anyone looking to plan a visit or know where I should go next, let me know in the comments below.

Also, thank you Americae for making me look and feel fabulous in the tropics. Check out this beautiful women's designer clothing store to update your travel wardrobe and remember: Reality is Extraordinary, Dress Accordingly!

Wedneslay for Galentine's Day

February 13, 2019

This post goes out to all my amazing Galentines! I am so grateful to be surrounded by the world's strongest and most talented women. For those who are wondering...

Inspired by Parks and Rec's very own Leslie Knope, Galentine's Day is a celebration of friendships among our favorite gal pals, with the chance to honor them on February 13th. I got to celebrate an early Galentine's Day last week with a few of my favorite people at the pre-screening to the movie Isn't It Romantic, starring Rebel Wilson hosted by the Philadelphia Film Center (previously the Prince Theater) in Center City.

It was an adorable movie about the value of romantic comedies and more importantly, recognizing and appreciating not only those around you but also yourself!

Speaking of movies and celebrating women, I recently listened to a great podcast on RadioLab about the story behind Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her push for women's rights. It highlighted her role in convincing the Supreme Court to recognize discrimination on the basis of sex as a violation of the constitution. Listening to what is described as a woman of small frame raise one of the fiercest defenses in front of the Supreme Court justices was awe-inspiring.

SILENCER: Justice Ginsburg put a stop to a patronizing lecture by Neil Gorsuch.

In order to acknowledge discrimination on the basis of sex, she brought forward cases not just where women were victims but also men. The landmark case involved was an Oklahoma statute that prevented men under the age of 21 from purchasing alcohol but not women. Yes, that's right - frat boys and beer were the key ingredients to winning this battle. The law was challenged as a violation of the 14th amendment equal protection clause. By recognizing this case as unconstitutional due to discrimination against sex, she was able to set precedent for gender equality. She continues to be a trailblazer for women's rights and I thank her along with all the amazing women out there for supporting one another.

And now, bringing it home to the birthplace of America - I have been eagerly awaiting the chance to share these photos from our Galentine's and Valentine's day shoot with you all! Philadelphia is such a beautiful city, I love showing it off ;) This dress by Badgley Mischka is everything. I love how in the first picture of this post, it's shaped like a heart too - how apropos! (You know you've found true friends, when they are willing to stand outside in sub-zero degree weather to get the perfect shot. Thank you Priyanca!)

Let's put the SLAY in WEDNESLAY. I encourage all of you to reach out to your girl squad and thank them for supporting you through thick and thin. Gone are the days of trying to fit into glass slippers, it's time to break those glass ceilings and celebrate each other.

A big shout out to Kelsey, the amazing artist behind Bolt in a Bottle Designs, for capturing my favorite image of strength and determination in this beautiful portrait. Check out more of her work here on Etsy.
